After two years as the Defensive Player of the Year in the Big East, wing Khyri Thomas entered the NBA Draft.  He has been doing the workouts, drills, etc. which are part of the evaluation process.  He is among the 69 men invited to the NBA Combine on 16-20 May, in Chicago.  Today, 13 May 2018, Khyri announced he will stay in the 2018 NBA Draft and hire an agent for representation.

Many were hoping Tazz would return for his senior season, while some among us were hoping to hear this very announcement.  Good arguments for both sides have been presented previously on the Creighton fan boards.

Creighton and Omaha have one of their finest sons on the ascent to professional sports.  Khyri is an excellent representative for both the school and the city.

Congratulations to Khyri and family, Creighton University, and the city of Omaha.

Creighton guard Khyri Thomas has hired an agent and will remain in the 2018 NBA Draft. MORE:

Hear from Creighton guard as he discusses his decision to remain in the 2018 NBA Draft.

After consulting with my family and Coach Mac, I have made the decision to remain in the NBA Draft. I would like to thank everyone at Creighton for their incredible support the last 3 yrs. It was an honor to play in my hometown in front of the best fans in the country!

“I’m thrilled for Khyri as he moves on to the next stage of his career,” said Creighton head coach Greg McDermott. “His selfless approach to the game, positive attitude and tireless work ethic has been a joy to be around the last three years. It has been an honor to be part of his development during that time. I look forward to supporting him as he pursues his dream of playing in the NBA and appreciate the manner in which he has represented Creighton University and our basketball program.”

Khyri will become the 5th Jay currently in the NBA and his selection is historic in that Justin Patton and Khyri Thomas will become the 1st Jays selected in back-to-back years in the NBA Draft.

Staccato – Spring Recruiting

3rd Stanza

Spring has sprung and college basketball recruiting has never let a little thing like weather get in it’s way.  Recruiting is in full swing.

The Jays are still beating the bushes in the transfer market – as expected being Transfer U – looking at several graduate and regular transfers to augment the roster.  We lost 4 seniors to graduation and Khyri is a possible 1st rounder in the NBA Draft (mid teens to high 20’s).  Mr. Thomas has declared, but no agent as of yet.  I fully expect Khyri to turn pro as his stock will probably not get higher with a senior year campaign.

The Jays are looking at several graduate transfers:  Matt Mooney (SDSU), Brock Stull, (UWM), among others.  Mooney has visited the Hilltop, but no word yet on a decision.  Mooney is down to TT, NW, and Creighton.  No visit yet for Stull although CU is listed in his Top 5.  It should be noted that Stull is very familiar with former UWM coaches now at Minnesota and Butler.  Stull is visiting UMinn.  Cremo committed to Villanova.

New guy – Grad Trans:  CG Tramaine Isabell (Drexel), 6’/180.  Averaged 21, 7.5 rebounds (at less than 6’0″) and 3.5 assists.

CU getting in on Isabell.

Among the regular transfers CU had major interest in PGs Koby McEwen (Utah St) and Malachi Flynn (Wash St), sit 1, play 2.  McEwen committed to Marquette 2 weeks ago.  Flynn committed to San Diego St. last week.

New sit 1/play 2 is SG Denzel Mahoney (SEMO), 6-4/213.  2016-17 OVC FoY.  2017-18 1st team All-OVC.  Denzel’s numbers:  Averaged 19.3 points and 5.3 boards this past season and shot 41 percent from 3.  200 FTs also. A native of Oviedo, Florida, Mahoney ranked second in the OVC in scoring with 19.3 points per game in 31 starts this season. He led the Redhawks in scoring, rebounding (5.1) and free throw percentage (.835), and ranked second in 3-pointers made (64) and minutes played (31.3). Mahoney also dished out 39 assists and had 28 steals.  Former FL HS 8A PoY.

Appreciate all the schools recruiting Denzel Mahoney at the present time. However, Denzel is down to his top 4 schools Creighton, Ole Miss, Georgia and Virginia Tech.

Thank you

Mahoney has set up visits to Creighton and Ole Miss according to his AAU coaches.
